Tony Escapa IV was born in San Juan, PR. His father a professional pianist and mother a TV Host. It was clear at a young age that passion and talent where a part of him. At age 9 Tony started guitar lessons, but those where short lived as he found his true passion on a Yamaha drum set that was in the same studio as the lessons. Tony quickly sat on the drums and began to play away with no initial training. His father was astounded and preceded to purchase Tony a practice pad, some sticks and said: " in order to get a drum set, you have to prove to me that you will take drumming seriously ". Tony had to learn rudiments and practice for at least two hours a day to prove him self worthy of a drum set. His father however, did not really know was he was getting into only since Tony would practice not for two but from four to eight hours a day.
Tony took private lessons from some of Puertorico's best musicians and teachers very early. But the lessons where just like the icing on the cake since little Tony would always be by his father's side in gigs or rehearsal's with legendary artist in the business even before he could walk That being the spark that ignited Tony's passion for music today.
At the age of 14, Tony moved to Orlando, Florida after being denied a chance to attend Puerto Rico's Escuela Libre De Musica but only to later benefit him. In Orlando Tony joined Lake Howell High Schools music program while also playing locally in Orlando with his father and friends
While in high school Tony was classically trained and was part of the Marching and Jazz band's for the 4 years he attended. But soon Tony became eager to learn of his heritage and began a journey back to his historical and musical roots of his native Puerto Rico.
At age 18, Tony returns home and indulges himself in the rich musical scene Puerto Rico offered at the time and after a few years Tony not willingly recieves a scholarship to attend Berklee College Of Music as he was part of a program called: "Berklee in Puerto Rico. Tony was one of the two full scholarship recipients.
In 2000' Tony moves to Boston and starts attending Berklee College of Music and playing and recording locally. At Berklee, Tony was quickly recognized as very promising talent and was chosen to travel representing Berklee in Japan 2001, the United States and later as a spokesman to the college in Puerto Rico.
Is important to mention that Tony Escapa was chosen by the Kennedy Center Of Art's in Washington DC also called the Jazz Ambassador's Program to travel to Central and Western Africa in an effort to exchange musical information in living proof of the evolution and influence of African music and tradition in the United States. One form being Latin Jazz !
Living in NY since 2003 Tony has quickly become part of one of the most interesting and influential musical scenes in the world. And like one of his mentors said one time "Tony's gift is not his ability to play music but the ability to make the rest of the ensemble sound great as a whole "
